Building Inspections

The primary goal of the Building Inspections department is to enforce the North Carolina State Building Codes to include electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire for all residential and commercial projects. This shall apply to ALL construction, alteration, movement, enlargement, replacement, repair, use and occupancy, demolition of every building or structure to include appurtenances connected or attached to such buildings or structures.* Residential building permit applications submitted to the Town on or after March 1, 2012 must comply with the 2012 NC State Residential Code.

*If your dwelling is located in a subdivision/neighborhood with a homeowners association (HOA) or property owner association (POA) please make sure your plans do not conflict with HOA/POA covenants first.

ONLINE PERMIT SUBMISSIONS are now online through the Citizenserve Portal.  The online portal will allow you to submit permit applications and view the status of your permits after they have been accepted. Inspection requests are made through the portal and results would be available in real-time as they are completed.

Crossover Permit Documents


Owners of private property may apply for a permit to rebuild their beach accesses by completing the follow steps:

a. Required application and documents are found here: 

b. Applications must include a sketch with dimensions of the proposed project

c. Applications must also include an estimate of how much of the beach access structure still remains as a percentage of the original structure

d. A CAMA permit may or may not be required, depending on if the damage to the property is categorized as repair or replacement
